Overtime Pay Calculator (Japan)
+More features: calculate from a monthly total, check for unpaid overtime
Detailed calculation from your total overtime hours
Just enter your total overtime for the month, and the part above 60 hours (premium 50%) is split out and calculated automatically (using the base hourly wage in the form above).
Unpaid overtime check (optional)
Enter the overtime pay shown on your payslip and the difference from the statutory minimum (an estimate of any shortfall) is displayed.
Enter the overtime you worked and see how much overtime pay you should be getting. The extra for late-night hours (10 p.m.–5 a.m.) and for work on a holiday is included, calculated at the minimum premium rates laid down by Japan’s Labor Standards Act. Handy for checking the overtime line on your Japanese payslip (給与明細).
How to use
- If you do not know your hourly wage, enter your monthly salary and average scheduled monthly hours — the base hourly wage is calculated automatically and filled into the field below.
- Enter the breakdown of your overtime (overtime, above 60 hours, statutory holiday, late night) in hours.
- The amount and its breakdown update automatically as you type (the button works as well).
How it is calculated
The calculation uses the minimum premium rates set by the Labor Standards Act.
| Type | Premium rate | Calculation |
|---|---|---|
| Overtime work (beyond the statutory 8 hours a day / 40 hours a week) | 25% or more | hourly wage × 1.25 × hours |
| Overtime work (the part above 60 hours a month) | 50% or more | hourly wage × 1.5 × hours |
| Work on a statutory holiday | 35% or more | hourly wage × 1.35 × hours |
| Late-night work (10 p.m.–5 a.m.) | 25% or more, added on | hourly wage × 0.25 × hours (the extra portion) |
Example: at 1,500 yen an hour with 20 hours of overtime → 1,500 × 1.25 × 20 = 37,500 yen

Assumptions and notes
- The “base hourly wage” is the basis on which premium wages are calculated. Family allowance, commuting allowance, separation allowance, child education allowance, housing allowance, temporary wages and bonuses are excluded from it.
- For late-night work, only “the +25% extra portion” is shown (the basic wage for those hours is already included in your ordinary pay). If hours are both overtime and late night, entering the same hours in the overtime field and the late-night field gives a total equivalent to 1.5 times.
- If your scheduled working hours are shorter than the statutory 8 hours, the resulting “within-statutory overtime” needs no premium, so it differs from this calculation.
Frequently asked questions
What if I have a fixed overtime allowance (minashi zangyo)?
Check how many hours the fixed allowance is meant to cover; any overtime beyond that has to be paid on top. Calculate the amount for your actual overtime with this tool and compare it with the fixed allowance.
Is working on a Saturday holiday work at 35%?
The 35% rate applies only to work on the one “statutory holiday” per week. With a two-day weekend, usually one day is the statutory holiday and the other is a company day off (in which case the 25% overtime rate normally applies). Check your company work rules to see which day is the statutory holiday.
Do part-time and casual workers get overtime pay too?
Yes. Regardless of employment type, work beyond the statutory working hours (8 hours a day, 40 hours a week) is subject to premium wages.
