Total up a whole drinking session

If you had several drinks, just pick the drink type (or type the amount and ABV by hand) — up to 5 rows are totaled instantly.

How long until the alcohol is broken down?

Estimates roughly how many hours after your last drink, using a breakdown rate of body weight × 0.1 g per hour (if the amount is blank, the result above is used).

The breakdown rate is a rough average with large individual and day-to-day differences — never use “the calculation says it is zero, so I can drive” as a judgment.

The results of this tool are approximations. Alcohol affects people very differently — if you are constitutionally sensitive to alcohol, pregnant, or taking medication, you should avoid drinking regardless of these numbers.
What this tool tells you

Just enter the amount and ABV of a drink to see how much pure alcohol enters your body. It also checks whether you reach the “risk-raising amount” defined in the national guideline of Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare — the benchmark used in Japan. Useful for reviewing your evening drinks.

How to use

  1. Enter the amount of alcohol you drank (or plan to drink) in mL.
  2. Enter the drink’s alcohol by volume (%) — it is printed on the can or bottle label.
  3. As you type, the pure alcohol amount and the risk check appear right below. No button needed.

How it is calculated

The risk check uses the drinking amount that raises the risk of lifestyle-related diseases (pure alcohol per day) defined in the “Guidelines on Health-Conscious Drinking” of Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare.

Daily pure-alcohol reference amounts (Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, Japan)
CategoryPure alcohol
Amount that raises lifestyle-disease risk (men)40 g or more
Amount that raises lifestyle-disease risk (women)20 g or more

Frequently asked questions

I hold my drink well — can I drink more?

“Not getting drunk easily” and “less health impact” are different things. Lifestyle-disease risk depends on the amount of pure alcohol, so even people with a strong constitution need to manage the amount.

How many hours until the alcohol leaves my body?

The breakdown speed varies enormously with build and constitution, so this tool does not judge it for you. Never drive on the basis of “it should be out of my system by now”.

Why does even one canned chuhai count as a risk?

A high-alcohol canned chuhai (9%, 500 mL) contains 36 g of pure alcohol — about 1.8 medium bottles of beer. Because the result depends on both ABV and volume, high-ABV drinks add up even in small amounts.
