Convert km/h to metres per minute and per second

How it is calculated
- Distance = speed × time / Speed = distance ÷ time / Time = distance ÷ speed
- Example: 150 km at 80 km/h → 150 ÷ 80 = 1.875 hours = about 1 hour 53 minutes
- Time is always entered in minutes (1 hour 30 minutes = 90 minutes).

Assumptions and notes
- On a real journey there are traffic lights, breaks and congestion, so you will not arrive in exactly the calculated time. When planning a drive it is realistic to assume a conservative average speed (roughly 80 km/h on expressways and 30 km/h on ordinary roads).
Frequently asked questions
What is the “hajiki” circle?
It is the way the relationship is memorised in Japanese schools, using a circle divided into speed (は, hayasa), time (じ, jikan) and distance (き, kyori). If you remember the single formula distance = speed × time, division gives you the other two.
How do I convert to metres per minute or per second?
Divide the speed in km/h by 60 for kilometres per minute and by 3600 for kilometres per second. So 60 km/h is 1 km per minute, or about 16.7 metres per second.
Can it calculate a running pace (minutes per km)?
This tool is built around speed in km/h. To get a pace from it, divide 60 by the speed in km/h: at 12 km/h the pace is 60 ÷ 12 = 5 minutes per km.
