Date ranges of the 12 signs
See the date range of every sign at a glance.
Just pick your birthday (month and day) to instantly see your star sign and birthstone. Boundary days — “is April 20 Aries or Taurus?” — are clear at a glance. Handy for filling in profiles or choosing a stone as a gift. The birthstones follow the list commonly used in Japan.
How to use
- Pick the month and day of the birthday (no year needed).
- The moment you pick, the star sign (with its Japanese name) and the birthstone appear below. No button needed.
How it is determined
- The 12 signs are assigned by the commonly used date ranges (for example, Aries is March 21 – April 19).
- The sign divisions are based on the position of the sun (the zodiac), so the boundary dates shift by about one day from year to year. If you were born on a boundary day, your sign can depend on your birth year and time.
- The birthstone shown is the representative gem for each month (the main one where a month has several).
Sources and assumptions
- The sign date ranges are the divisions customarily used in astrology. The birthstones are representative stones based on the selection by Japan’s national jewelry wholesalers’ cooperative (全国宝石卸商協同組合, revised in 2021), which is widely used in Japan. Neither implies any scientifically proven effect.
Assumptions and notes
- If you were born on a boundary day (such as between April 19 and 20), different publications may list your sign one day differently.
- Birthstone lists differ somewhat by country and organization (some list coral for March or moonstone for June, for example).
Frequently asked questions
I was born on the boundary between two signs. Which one is mine?
The switch between signs is set by the moment the sun moves from one sign to the next, and the date shifts by about a day depending on the year. To know precisely, you need your birth year and time of birth. For ordinary profile purposes, the ranges used by this tool are fine.
Why do books and shops show different birthstones?
Because the selection differs slightly by country and jewelry organization. In Japan, the selection by the national jewelry wholesalers’ cooperative (revised in 2021 with additions) is widely used.
Can I also find my Chinese zodiac animal?
Yes — the Age Calculator on this site shows the Chinese zodiac animal together with your age from your birth date (see “All tools”).
